I wasn’t paid for ‘Obra’ series – Janet Ackom recounts

Veteran actress Janet Ackom, who starred in Osofo Dadzie’s and the well-known TV series ‘Obra’, has shared her story of struggling to make ends meet without receiving compensation.

She claimed that because she and many others at the time were so passionate about their craft, money was not the primary concern; however, when she had to provide for her family and herself, life got intolerable.

While reflecting on the early seasons of the Obra TV series, the actress opened up on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning with Roselyn Felli.

Even though they were the stars of the era, they had to make ends meet on little to no money, which made life difficult.

As you mentioned, you were not really paid, but everyone you met assumed you were wealthy. What was it like to live up to the whole celebrity status? Roselyn Felli, the host, enquired.

“That’s what they think. We loved the work, but they didn’t pay us. It made us suffer because when you wore a dress out, you would have to wear the same dress to church,” she recounted.

Her dependence on her meagre earnings following the traumatic event led her to never dream of owning a home. Despite her lack of income, Mrs. Ackom occasionally sacrificed her marriage to pursue her acting career, a decision that her husband approved of.

But why did she not stop acting?

“I had just finished Form 4, and it was around 1973. I didn’t go to secondary school, and I didn’t learn anything. So, if I stopped acting, what am I going to do? And I loved acting,” she said.

Mrs. Ackom never received gifts, in contrast to Grace Omaboe, also known as Maame Dokono, who also disclosed on the show that she was given numerous properties, including lands, as gifts from people who valued her work.

Mrs Ackom has relied on commercial transport, also referred to as “trotro,” for all of her travel needs ever since she began acting.

“Obra” in Akan, meaning Life, was a Ghanaian television drama series that was very popular in Ghana in the 1980s towards the 2000s. The casts graced Ghanaians with an unlimited mixture of fun, drama, and education about life.

In 1975, Janet Ackom started her acting career. Later in the 1990s, she came out of the “Osofo Dadzie” series and joined the “Obra” team. She rose to prominence in the series due to her reputation for playing tough roles.

The show is still broadcasting on GTV today, featuring both new and some of the original cast members. But for a while now, it has been put on hold because of certain circumstances—which the actors declined to discuss.

Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel wins appeal over murder conviction

Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel’s conviction for the murder of an associate more than a decade ago was quashed on Thursday, with a London court ruling that attempts to bribe the trial jury meant the conviction was unsafe.

The musician, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is one of Jamaica’s most popular artists and has collaborated with performers such as Jay-Z and Rihanna.

Kartel, 48, has been in jail in Jamaica since 2011 over the disappearance of his associate Clive “Lizard” Williams, whose body has never been found.

After a 64-day trial in Kingston, one of the longest in Jamaican history, Kartel and three others were convicted in 2014. Kartel was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 35 years, later reduced on appeal to 32-and-a-half.

Last month, Kartel and his co-defendants mounted their final possible appeal at the Privy Council in London, the final court of appeal in Jamaica and some other Commonwealth countries.

Their lawyers argued the trial judge wrongly handled allegations that one juror offered 500,000 Jamaican dollars (around $3,200) to fellow jurors to return not guilty verdicts.

The defendants’ appeals were allowed on Thursday, with Judge David Lloyd-Jones saying the trial judge’s decision to allow the juror alleged to have offered bribes to continue on the jury was “fatal to the safety of the convictions”.

The Privy Council sent the case back to the Court of Appeal in Jamaica to decide whether Kartel and his co-defendants should stand trial again.

YOLO star Drogba’s sister details about the actor’s health status

Hannah Mensah, the sister of popular Ghanaian celebrated YOLO TV series star Drogba, discloses her brother’s current state of health.

On March 8, 2023, actor Jeffrey Nortey, Drogba’s colleague, revealed to the public the news of his health condition, which was determined to be demyelination.

When the layer of protection surrounding nerves is damaged, it can lead to demyelination, which can cause issues.

Speaking on Hitz FM yesterday, Drogba’s sister disclosed that her brother have not been well since the last season of YOLO and have been visiting the hospital once every week.

“I think in his last season, if you can remember, he was not performing like he used to do in the previous season, he tried to act but could not. So, he has been in the house.

“Right now, we are in the hospital because of his eyes; he is having double vision with the right eye, and he’s having pain with it. We come once every week for treatment and medications prescribed.

“Last week, we came for the extraction of the fluid from his spine. And that is why we are waiting for the result. They said they have to take the test outside for more inquiries before we have the results out,” she stated.

She also mentioned that she is not as strong as her brother and that she occasionally needs assistance from others to get through life’s tasks.

  • I will sue Lil win for accusing me of using weed toffee – Mr Logic

I will sue Lil win for accusing me of using weed toffee – Mr Logic

Emmanuel Barnes, also known as Mr. Logic, is a Ghanaian entertainment pundit and artist manager. He has taken a strong stand against Kumawood actor Lilwin and announced his intention to file a defamation lawsuit.

The enraged industry figure responded strongly after Lilwin publicly accused Mr. Logic of using a “weed toffee.”

Known for his direct approach, Mr. Logic strongly refuted the claims in an interview with Hit FM’s Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, highlighting the possible damage the accusation could do to his standing in the industry and reputation.

In the entertainment industry, allegations of substance abuse can be especially damaging. Mr. Logic is committed to using the legal system to dispel these claims. He added that he could be tested in order to get confirmation.

The artiste manager believes the accusation stems from his questioning of the actor regarding the use of Nigerian actors in his upcoming film, “A country called Ghana.” On February 22, 2024, Mr. Logic said on Daybreak Hitz that he could not understand LilWin’s decision to use Nigerian actors in a film that aimed to showcase Ghanaian culture and patriotism.

While he acknowledged that collaborating with Nigerian actors might help the film find a larger audience and be featured on a global platform such as Netflix, he expressed concern that the film would deny Ghanaian actors an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.

“It’s a good one because of the agenda to get onto Netflix. But to continue doing the same thing for commercial purposes, I don’t think it’s advisable. The Ghanaian movie industry is still under the carpet. So it’s best if he lifts up the industry by lifting up young talents like Fifi Coleman is doing.

“Why are you making a movie named “A Country Called Ghana” and featuring Nigerians in it? We should put Ghanaian actors and stories first, stories that connect with our people,” he said. “It’s about uplifting our own,” he said.

Lilwin was not amused by this and has since started making fun of and insulting the well-known figure in the music industry.

Ghanaian musician Amerado claims that he has not made up his mind to offer his hit song “Kweku Ananse” to a political campaign just yet.

During an interview on AKOMA FM in Kumasi, the musician expressed that he is aware of the potential risks associated with endorsing a political party, but he is not committed to supporting any particular party with his song.

“I have not had any political thoughts about affiliating with any political party yet, but as an artiste under a record label, my label has had no engagements with any political party as far as I am concerned”, Amerado told host Tony Best on March 9.

Rather than chasing after clouts, which he feels rarely work out well for artists, Amerado says he is currently concentrating on his next releases and his career.

Waakye’s death: I fear might die same incident – Maame Dokono

Legendary Ghanaian actress Maame Dokono, whose real name is Grace Omaboe, has stated that she worries she might pass away similarly to the late actor Prince Yawson, also known as Waakye.

In an exclusive interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli for the Prime Morning show, Maame Dokono revealed the reason behind the late actor’s passing, saying that Waakye’s death was caused by an error made by someone.

The seasoned actress, well-known for her contributions to Ghana’s entertainment sector, underlined the importance of exercising prudence and caution when managing health-related issues.

“Waakye’s death was all of a sudden. It was somebody’s mistake, and Waakye was dead because I spoke with him on the morning of that day, and he was dead in the evening,” she said.

The renowned actress, who was devastated to learn of Waakye’s passing, fears she might end up just like the late actor. Though her mother passed away after a century, she still hopes to live to be as old as her.

In her own words, “I was so devastated and didn’t know what to do. So, maybe my death will be like that. I’m almost 80. I’m hoping to be like my mother. She was 115 years old, and if I take good care of myself, I should be able to live like her.”

Uganda has arrested Rexxie, a well-known singer and record producer from Nigeria.

The producer of the popular song “KKP” announced his detention by Ugandan Immigration on his Instagram page early on Monday morning. Rexxie is not the first Nigerian artist to have been arrested in Uganda. It is recalled that Omah Lay and Tems were also arrested, charged to court, and subsequently detained in prison in Uganda. They were taken into custody for breaking the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. But after two days in custody, they were eventually freed.
