On Thursday, a secondary school teacher who was suspected of suicide was discovered dead.

According to Area Assistant Chief Johnson Manyara, the deceased, identified as Kevin Omwenga, taught chemistry and mathematics at Nyamira Boys Secondary School in Nyamira, Kenya.

As reported by Citizen Digital, Omwenga was heavily indebted, having borrowed Ksh50,000 ($380, or GHC5,654.75) from other teachers, most of which he had supposedly lost while playing the Aviator betting game. Omwenga was an avid player of the game.

“I have gathered from his colleagues that he borrowed a lot of money but lost most of it playing the Aviator game,” said Manyara.

The principal of Nyamira Boys School, George Onkundi, reported that Omwenga did not show up for work on Wednesday despite being last seen close to the school.

“He had not yet been employed by the TSC but had been teaching with us under BOM for the past four years. He didn’t show any signs of stress,” the principal stated.

A few teachers went to Omwenga’s house to see how he was doing after he failed to answer calls on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The teachers kept knocking on the door until they could no longer see through a window, where they saw Omwenga’s body hanging. The area assistant chief was then called, along with police.

At the time of the incident, Omwenga’s wife and their one-year-old child were in the village visiting his ailing mother.

The deceased was transported to the Nyamira Referral Hospital.
