Ghana’s Wiyaala & Atongo Zimba made it to the list of ‘Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time’

Atongo Zimba and Wiyaala from Ghana have been included in the list of “The Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Wiyaalaโ€™s Village Sex and Atongoโ€™s No Beer in Heaven took the 419 and 316 positions respectively.

The list was compiled after two years of research by Alan Tigay, a seasoned author and music reviewer.

Wiyaala recently shared the good news on Facebook, wrote; “GHANA IS IN!

The esteemed author Alan M. Tigay of “World Listening Post” assembled the list.

The “list reflects global reality,” according to Tigay, not limiting itself to “a few genres” or “just the past few years,” and it most definitely goes beyond songs that are performed in the English language, something that authors of such lists, sadly, frequently fail to do.

He did, however, acknowledge that the “inclusive list” is by no means “final.”

โ€œIf I can offer one insight it would be that the most one can hope for is a list that is impressionistic. In two years of research I have concluded that there must be at least 10,000 songs that merit inclusion in a roster of the 500 best,โ€ he revealed.

Legendary artists such as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Edith Piaf, and The West; Africa’s Fela Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita, and Miriam Makeba; Asia’s Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Teresa Teng; and the Middle East’s Ofra Haza and Googoosh were among those featured on the Global 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

With their distinctive sound, the Wiyaala duo has established a solid niche for themselves and gained a sizable fan base outside of Ghana.

  • Itโ€™s a shame to say my music is appreciated better outside Ghana โ€“ Wiyaala

Itโ€™s a shame to say my music is appreciated better outside Ghana โ€“ Wiyaala

Ghanaian singer and song-writer Noella Wiyaala Nwadei better known by her stage name Wiyaala has said that she is very popular in Ghana and does not pay heed to those who think otherwise. She described the people who had contributed to this assertion as shallow minded and shortsighted.

The โ€œLenoโ€ hitmaker, in a recent interview with RazaSwaggy on โ€œRush Hourโ€ in Cape Coast, revealed that she performs a lot in Ghana. This was in response to a question posed by the host whether she performed more outside Ghana than in Ghana. She further disclosed that a lot of her Ghanaian performances are corporate events and she does not see the need to post everything on social media.

Wiyaala, who describes her genre of music as folk, traditional and African, acknowledges that not everyone appreciates her style of music, and stated that shouldnโ€™t be a basis for people to be biased and discredit her work. She believes in her craft and knows her opinions are valid and important in the public eye. She further stated that it is a dent on the Ghanaian music industry and Ghanaians as a whole if people think her music is appreciated better by foreigners. โ€œIf people are saying white people are appreciating my music more than my own people, that means thereโ€™s something wrong with my own people,โ€ she said.

On a lighter note, the singer mentioned her physique as one of the things that make her popular aside her unique talent. And further touted her popularity; โ€œI know I am popular in Ghana. If I was not popular, you would not be interviewing me right now.โ€

Wiyaala registered her presence on the Ghanaian music scene in 2009 with her first album, โ€œTumu.โ€ She has since then chalked major success in her career, performed on several international stages and won several local and international awards.
