    The activities, which included several games and ran smoothly for weeks, are set to conclude on March 23rd, leaving amazing memories. Stanley Enow of Cameroon, Innoss’B of the Congo, and other surprises are among the other incredible talents that will grace the stage.

    At the grand opening ceremony, Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale, King Promise, the highlife legends Ebo Taylor, and Pat Thomas performed alongside South African singer Kamo Mphela.

    The anticipation is palpable as fans anticipate amazing performances from Stonebwoy and Wiyaala.

    Ghana tops WAEC Excellence Awards overall

    Tuesday, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) presented the top three International Excellence Awards to Ghana, in recognition of candidates who excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

    At this year’s Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, last Tuesday, all the boys ascended the podium to accept the award.

    St. James Seminary once again stood out among the three Ghanaian students who won the coveted award, having chosen two of the top prizes from the 2,327,342 candidates from the council’s five member nations.

    The Awardees
    Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton, formerly of St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS), who is currently reading Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, was adjudged the overall winner. He topped with a score of 623.5512.

    Dzandu Selorm, formerly of the Labone SHS, now a medical student at the KNUST, took the second spot with a score of 623.1882, while another former St James Seminary SHS student, Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, currently at the Ashesi University took the third place with 622.4438.

    A candidate must receive an A1 in a minimum of eight subjects—English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, and Integrated Science—as well as in one subject area from the core subjects in order to be eligible for an Excellent Award.

    Commendations
    Commenting on the award, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, congratulated the awardees for lifting the flag of Ghana high on such an international platform.

    “We are proud of our students for their consistent performance at the WASSCE.

    Last year, two out of the three were from Ghana and this year, we are here again and this time round, we are taking all the three awards,” he said.

    Describing the performance as a source of pride for the GES and the country as a whole, Dr Nkansah said the performance of the students meant that, “We are doing something right.”

    He thanked Ghanaian teachers and their head of school for their continuous sacrifices which were yielding positive results.

    “To all teachers, I wish to say kudos to you all and the management of education, especially at the school level, I thank all of them for the yeoman’s job,” the Director-General said and urged them to continue to work harder for more awards.

    He commended the management and teachers of the St James Seminary SHS for consistently producing award-winning students.

    Exams malpractice
    In a welcome address, the Chairman of the Council, Professor Ato Essuman, gave the assurance that the council was doing all it could to confront the menace of examination malpractice head-on. 

    “It gives us much worry therefore when we hear of persistent incidence of examination malpractice in public examinations because it represents a threat to public confidence in the credibility of the examination system,” Prof. Essuman said.

    As a result, he urged all governments and members of WAEC to back the organization’s efforts to eradicate the threat and urged all parties involved to work together to confront it.

    Appreciation
    In a speech, Mr Amo-Kodieh said he was, “highly elated and deem it a great honour and privilege to have been selected as the overall best student of the 2023 WASSCE”.

    He said he had constantly shown dedication to pushing his intellectual boundaries, accepting new challenges, and actively participating in a dynamic learning environment throughout his pursuit of academic excellence.

    Mr Amo-Kodieh was grateful to the government and all stakeholders for the immense support, “that has promoted this course of achievement to fruition.”

    “We the awardees would like to reiterate our profound gratitude to the government, the GES, the Ministry of Education, the WAEC and particularly our families for the role each of them played in our education,” he said

    SHS students to receive free laptops – Prez Akufo Addo promises

    A ground-breaking programme to improve digital access and education in secondary schools across Ghana is about to be launched by H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the president of the country.

    The “One Student One Laptop” programme, which is set to launch on March 25th, has the potential to completely transform the educational experience for students attending Senior High Schools (SHSs) throughout Ghana.

    With the implementation of this initiative, all SHS students will be given personal laptops, which will help close the digital divide and provide young people with the resources they need to succeed in the technologically advanced world of today. Students will start receiving laptops as soon as the official launch takes place.

    According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the programme gives every SHS student a government-provided laptop that has already been pre-programmed with the goal of improving computer literacy and technological proficiency among young Ghanaian students.

    Additionally, it is consistent with government initiatives supporting digitalization and e-learning. In preparing Ghanaian students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, popularly known as the digital age, it also fits with the government’s plan to leverage technology breakthroughs.

    By providing Digital Learning Content, Teaching and Learning Management Systems, and Educational Devices to all Senior High and TVET Schools across the country, the initiative seeks to improve Senior High School Education.

    The government’s pledge to give laptops to each and every SHS student was made public by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last year. The execution of this project demonstrates the government’s commitment to secondary education, particularly in light of the fact that instruction at that level has been free since 2017.

    George Darko, a legendary musician and pioneer of burger highlife, passes away.

    He has been active in the music industry since the late 1960s and has performed as a guitarist, singer, composer, and songwriter.

    Telecel Ghana to refund data package after network restoration

    Telecel Ghana, a telecommunications service provider, has announced that it will begin offering its customers a data refund for expired bundles as a result of the nationwide network disruptions that occurred on March 14.

    Telecel said that its services are being restored and that it has regained all of its lost connectivity in a statement that was uploaded on X.

    “Dear cherished customer, Telecel Ghana is pleased to inform you that we [have] secured 100% of our internet capacity and services are being restored. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.

    “Please be assured that our team has started work on refunds of expired bundles and related issues”, the statement concluded.

    In a related development, Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, announced that telecom service providers are obtaining additional network capacity in order to address the nation’s ongoing internet blackout.

    Ken Ashigbey in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight programme on Monday, March 18, noted, amongst other things, that the connectivity challenges Ghanaians faced following the cable cuts are not the same currently as “we are beginning to see an improvement in the services”.

    “As we talked about a minimum of five weeks to fix those cables, the telecom service providers and then the undersea cable [service providers] would be looking to bring capacity from other sources into the country.

    “And so once they’re able to bring adequate capacity to meet what you actually had before the [cable cuts], then you’d have provided the connectivity back to what it was and so you’d not be getting that from those four cables”, Ing. Ken Ashigbey told Keminni Amanor, the host.

    After the repairs are finished, he said, telecom service providers will be able to return to the cable source, stressing that “the most important thing is to continue sourcing from other sources as we wait for those cables to be fixed”.

    The founder and leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has promised that if elected president, he will mobilise Ghana’s resources to ensure that the nation never again needs assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

    He supported this with a story about how, even though he earned a significant portion of his income overseas, Ghana supplied the majority of the resources he used to do so.

    “Although I made half a million outside Ghana, all the industrialisation and projects I have in my empire came from the resources I mobilised in this country,” Mr Bediako said in a radio interview.

    Asserting effective resource management is a top priority, the independent presidential candidate hinted that Ghana could quickly achieve socioeconomic stability and self-sufficiency.

    “I am the new IMF for Ghana if I can find a solution for Ghana to gain $10 billion to $30 billion within 4 years,” he added while outlining his vision for revitalising the country’s economy and improving the standard of living for the ordinary citizen.

    In the same spirit, Cheddar declared that, should he be elected to the highest position in the land, he would lead the entire nation with fewer than 20 ministers in order to reduce spending and the wastage of tax payers’ money.

    Regarding the contentious topic of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQI+), Mr. Bediako recommended the media to hold off on demeaning the issue since they were calling people’s attention—especially young people—to it.

    “I was brought up in Ghana, and I know nothing about LGBTQI+. I think we were not taught that, and we must be cautious about how we are making it popular through various mediums,” he explained.

    In addition, when questioned about it, Cheddar stated that he was in favour of modifying Ghana’s 1992 Constitution to ensure good governance and to reflect modern times, but that it should be done gradually to avoid completely ruining it.

    “I think the constitution of Ghana should be reviewed slowly. If you try to change something with force, it can be broken,” the Leader and Founder of the New Force said.

    Using the occasion, Mr. Bediako urged Ghanaians, particularly the younger generation, to join and support the New Force, claiming that it was their only chance for salvation.
