    Ghana records 31 new COVID-19 cases

    31 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the country over the past week, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS). The Expanded Programme on Immunization’s Programmes Manager, Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano of the Ghana Health Service, made it clear that these cases are not serious.

    In an Accra media conference, Dr. Amponsah-Achiano announced that the Ghana Health Service will launch a vaccination campaign on Sunday, May 5, 2024, with the goal of halting the virus’s spread.

    “In the past week or so, we were recording some significant numbers up to about 30 or 31 or so. But this is not unexpected. As we have already been saying, COVID has come to stay with us.

    “It is part of us. And so from time to time and that is why we also haven’t given up on vaccination and so if you are aware, from 5th to 9th May, we are going to do another exercise of COVID vaccination.

    “So we are doing the national COVID-19 vaccination exercise as part of our strategies to reduce COVID to the barest minimum.”

    In response to an increase in COVID-19 infections in healthcare facilities, the Health Service (GHS) announced that it has also launched a national vaccination campaign.

    The vaccination campaign, which is slated to take place from May 4 to May 10, 2024, attempts to lessen the recent spike in cases, especially in Greater Accra, where the highest numbers have been documented.

    The Ghana Health Service highlights the rapid spread of the virus and stresses the importance of strictly adhering to safety procedures.

    During a press briefing, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, underlined the significance of mass vaccination to stop the virus’s spread and urged every Ghanaian to take part in the campaign.

    He stated: “Parts of Accra and a few other regions are reporting a few cases. And it highlights the need for vaccination among Ghanaians. For this reason, we are planning a national COVID-19 vaccination campaign to take place from May 4 to May 10, and we want to encourage every Ghanaian to participate.

  • Nigerian Starlink users face payment hurdles after price crash

    Nigerian Starlink users face payment hurdles after price crash

    With the recent strengthening of the naira against the US dollar, Nigerian internet users are finding it more difficult to afford Starlink satellite internet service, despite a significant price cut.

    SpaceX-owned Starlink reduced the cost of the hardware by over 45%, from the previous price of almost N1m to N440,000.

    Clients using the company’s website to make payments are running into technical issues.

    Starlink touted its offering as “unlimited high-speed internet available everywhere in Nigeria with speeds up to 160 Mbps, available for NGN38,000 per month.”

    Due to Starlink’s constellation of highly advanced satellites operating in a low orbit around the earth, users are able to engage in activities that have historically not been possible with satellite Internet. The hardware kit, which is currently sold for N440,000, is typically installed at residences.

    Internet users in Nigeria are becoming more and more irate, and they are taking to the social media site X, which was once known as Twitter, to express their frustration.

    On the company’s website, a number of users complained about having trouble paying for Starlink with their naira cards.

    “After we just finished paying N1.8m to buy two of your products just two weeks ago, I feel like just crying,” said Stanley, a disgruntled customer, about X.

    Stanley’s worries were echoed by a number of other users, who brought attention to the website’s denial of naira cards and the difference in price for early adopters.

    Paul Ehrima pleaded for alternative payment methods, stating, “I have used numerous naira and USD cards to make a purchase, but it didn’t go through. Kindly give us a better alternative payment method.”

    Some, like Justin, said they received their hardware successfully but could not activate their subscription because their naira card payments did not go through.

    Florence Abebe surmised that deposit verification could be hampered by a website malfunction.

    “I tried to register, but it appeared your website may have an issue. It is unable to verify the deposit due,” she explained on X.

    In response to the substantial price reduction and payment difficulties, Agozie Ani and Jasper Nwoko added their voices to the chorus of irritation.

    In the meantime, the value of the naira significantly increased recently in relation to the dollar.

    Since the beginning of January, the value of the naira has increased; it is currently trading at about N1,300, up from about N1,900 at the beginning.

    Due to the high upfront equipment cost and monthly subscription fees, Starlink Internet service in Nigeria is still too expensive for the typical Nigerian consumer, even with its high-speed capabilities.

    Additionally, it has joined forces with Jumia, the most well-known e-commerce site in Nigeria, to promote the product.

    Jamaican govt ordered to cover legal fees for Vybz Kartel’s successful conviction appeal

    In light of the recent UK Privy Council decision to reverse the murder convictions of popular dancehall artist Vybz Kartel and his three co-accused, King Charles III has issued an official order for the payment of defence costs.

    The formal directive, which was obtained by Jamaica’s Observer from Kartel’s attorney, Isat Buchanan, states that it follows the decision to overturn the convictions of Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, Andre St. John, and Vybz Kartel (Adijah Palmer), who were serving time for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

    “His Majesty was pleased by and with the advice of His Privy Council to approve the report and to order that those charged with administering the Government of Jamaica and all others whom it may concern are to ensure that it is punctually observed and obeyed,” stated the order, which was dated April 10, 2024 and signed by a Privy Council clerk.

    The order included four recommendations from the Privy Council:

    (1) It is appropriate to grant the appeal;

    (2) Due to juror misconduct, the appellants’ convictions ought to be overturned;

     (3) The matter ought to be returned to the Court of Appeal so that it can determine whether to mandate a new trial as soon as it is reasonably possible;

     (4) In the event that an agreement cannot be reached, the Respondent shall reimburse the Appellants’ costs.

     The case was returned to the local Court of Appeal in March following the quashing of the convictions.

     In order to decide whether to order a retrial or to release the men, the Court of Appeal is scheduled to meet on June 10.

     In April 2014, Kartel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after completing 35 years of his original sentence. The other co-accused members of the group were also given life sentences; St John will be eligible for parole after 15 years, and Shawn Storm and Jones after 25 years.

  • Ghana Welcomes Starlink, a Revolution in Communication

    Ghana Welcomes Starlink, a Revolution in Communication

    Elon Musk’s SpaceX recently launched the satellite broadband application Starlink, making Ghana the eighth African country to use this innovative internet service, following its approval by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in Ghana.

    This invention, which delivers multi-gigabit speeds and lower latency through satellite technology, is anticipated to challenge the region’s current internet service providers.

    Customers have raved about Starlink’s service, pointing out notable increases in dependability and speed over more established suppliers. Currently, Mozambique, Eswatini, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria are the seven African nations where the service is offered.

    It is expected that this expansion will encourage healthy competition and better prices by upending the monopoly held by some internet providers. Starlink promises to transform network access and connectivity in Africa as it grows further, giving internet access a much-needed boost throughout the continent.

    E/R: 3 women brutally murdered in Sekesua

    Three innocent lives have tragically been lost in a series of horrible crimes that have shaken the peaceful community of Kroboland in Ghana’s Eastern Region. This is a startling development. Richard Tetteh, 35, has confessed to the Ghana Police that he was responsible for these senseless murders, exposing a dark plot that has horrified and depressed the neighbourhood.

    The terrible incidents took place in Sekesua in April 2024, Oterkpolu in February 2024, and Nuaso Odjam in April 2024. Tetteh’s motivations remain a mystery, but it is purported that he took a pitiful GHC500.00 for each life he brutally took, allegedly at the request of a chop shop owner from Agɔmaanɔ, Lower Manya.

    The revelation of Tetteh’s methods has given the tragedy a terrifying new depth. He admitted taking fluid and saliva from the victims with a handkerchief, which he then deviously gave to an unsuspecting food vendor.

    People in Kroboland are experiencing a mixture of shock and agony as a result of the news, finding it difficult to comprehend the unbelievable events taking place in their town. Tetteh’s lack of regret has only made the wounds inflicted on the bereaved community more severe.

    In the community, there are many expressions of grief and anxiety. One resident bemoaned, “I am upset and sad. He does not even look remorseful.”

    Amidst the mourning, there is a resounding cry for increased consciousness and solidarity, particularly from women who are expected to prioritise their own safety. The community is unwavering in its resolve to hold those responsible for the victims’ deaths accountable and to pursue justice for them.

    “You cannot commit a crime on Kroboland and go unpunished. One resident said, “We will help the police find you and arrest you,” demonstrating the community’s resolve to combat the evil of violence that has tarnished their cherished country.
