American music icon Stevie Wonder arrives in Ghana, decides to relocate permanently

The renowned American musician Stevie Wonder has touched down in Ghana, having made the decision to relocate there permanently in 2021.

Wonder was greeted at the Kotoka International Airport by a local music group featuring drumming and cultural displays, according to an Instagram post on the Beyond The Return official page.

It is currently unknown whether the 74-year-old Grammy Award winner intends to remain in Ghana permanently.

The music icon was also seen playing the drums that the local music group used to welcome him, which goes along with his natural love of music.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in February 2021, the renowned, multi-award winning artist gave his reason for choosing to relocate to Ghana, citing the political unrest in the US.

“I wanna see this nation smile again. And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana because I’m going to do that.”

Winfrey then asked, “You’re going to permanently move to Ghana?”

“I am,” replied the singer. He added, “I don’t want to see my children’s children’s children have to say, ‘Oh please like me. Please respect me, please know that I am important, please value me.’ What is that?”

Born in Michigan, Stevie Wonder joined Motown in 1961 after learning to play the harmonica, drums, and piano by the age of nine. He has received 74 nominations for Grammy Awards, 25 wins, and an honorary award.

American Rapper Ja Rule collaborates with NGO to construct classrooms in Ghana

American rapper Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Bruce Atkins, has teamed up with an international nonprofit organisation Pencils of Promise to construct a new school building in Ghana.

The project will give the St. John’s Anglican Basic School in Nuaso, Eastern Region, additional facilities and a much-needed six-unit classroom block.

Ja Rule’s dedication was clear during the groundbreaking event. He conveyed his happiness at returning the favour to the community.

“I’m proud to be out here to have the audacity to come out here to build a school for my people,” Ja Rule said, adding “I know this will be an opportunity that will last for many years to come, this is just the beginning of something special.”

Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were the deputy minister for arts and tourism, who wished Ja Rule well and urged him to support Ghana’s “Beyond the Return” campaign when he returned to the United States.

Pencils of Promise CEO explained the selection of Nuaso and the project timeline. Both the CEO and his wife received traditional smocks as a gesture of welcome.

“This project for the Nuaso basic school will be a six-unit classroom block and washroom facilities,” the CEO said.

“It will take several months, we will get started in June. It may take a while, but before the end of the year, it’ll be done. We always think about places that need us the most, we can’t do every community every single time, we care for the communities that will partner with us, and we’ll do the work together.”
