Mahama Promises TV Channel for Creative Arts Sector

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former president, has promised to establish a television network dedicated to the creative arts sector if he wins the 2024 election.

On June 7, 2024, at the AH Hotel in Accra, Mahama made this announcement during a policy discussion with creative arts stakeholders.

Mahama stated that the exclusive TV channel will be accessible via Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), but viewers will need to pay to access it.

“On the digital terrestrial television, we will acquire a special channel for the creative arts. It will be an events channel. And you can display all your work there. If you have a big show like Stonebwoy or Amandzeba performing, or a large group of performers, we will have the technology to make that show payable.

“So even though it will be on the DTT, you would have to pay electronically and then you will be given a code to watch,” he explained.

Mahama emphasized the lack of opportunities in Ghana for young creative talent to showcase their abilities.

“The creative arts sector is incredibly important and has the potential to generate millions of jobs. Many young people are brimming with talent but lack the opportunities to showcase it. By solidifying the foundation of the creative industry, we can create numerous opportunities for our youth,” he remarked.

He also unveiled additional plans to propel the creative industry forward should the NDC be granted the chance to govern the nation once more.
