AFCON 2023: Stonebwoy makes predictions about the Black Stars

African Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion in 2023, Stonebwoy, an award-winning reggae and dancehall artist, has issued a challenge to Ghana’s Black Stars.

Before the team left on Wednesday, he said these things at the farewell dinner that President Akufo-Addo had arranged in Kumasi.

The hitmaker of “Overlord” vowed to help the team and encouraged them to play well in hopes of winning the African Cup.

“We wholeheartedly support them in every way. Yes, it will surprise everyone in the world and throughout Africa, but I have a lot of faith in my brothers and the technical team, so they should go out there and do us good and possibly win the African Cup for us in this tournament,” he remarked.

“Dede Ayew, who we met in Qatar, is a brother.” He continued, “God knows how happy I am to be here with the players, the President, and everyone else.

On Sunday, January 14, 2024, Ghana, who is in Group B, will play Cape Verde in the first game of the group stage.

The Black Stars arrived in Ivory Coast on Wednesday afternoon, where they held their first practice before playing their first game at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on January 14, 2024. Four days later, they will play Egypt at the same stadium, and on January 22, 2024, they will play Mozambique at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.

  • 2023 AFCON: Gambia coach feared team would die on aborted flight to Ivory Coast

2023 AFCON: Gambia coach feared team would die on aborted flight to Ivory Coast

The Gambia squad travelling to Ivory Coast for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations “could have died” during a flight that was aborted, coach Tom Saintfiet claimed.

The Air Cote d’Ivoire flight turned around just minutes after leaving the Gambian capital Banjul on Wednesday.

Saintfiet believes there was a lack of oxygen, saying conditions prompted many of the delegation to fall asleep.

The coach praised quick thinking by the pilot for keeping his team safe.

Officials from the airline confirmed there had been a pressurisation issue.

Saintfiet told BBC Sport Africa: “The local crew said there was a problem with the air conditioning before we took off but that it would be all fine when we took off.

“After a few minutes, it was very hot in the plane.

“We all fell asleep because there was a lack of oxygen – some of the players couldn’t be woken up. The pilot noticed and we had to return.

“People got headaches and if the flight had gone on for another 30 minutes, the whole team would have died. The strange thing is that the oxygen masks didn’t come out – it’s good that the pilot realised that this was a deadly situation and so turned back.

“But we are still in shock.”

Air Cote d’Ivoire is the official airliner of Afcon 2023, and a statement from the company said the aircrew decided to turn back because of a pressurisation problem.

It added that the issue could have been resolved by a mechanic on the ground, but that the flight was ultimately cancelled because of the impact earlier delays had on the crew’s working hours.

Saintfiet suggested the passengers could have been facing carbon monoxide poisoning, but Gambia Football Federation (GFF) president Lamin Kaba Bajo said there was no evidence to support that remark.

“I never felt it and it’s not clinically, scientifically or medically proven,” Kaba Bajo told the BBC.

“Those are individual observations and perceptions, but there was not anything like that. I was almost sitting next to the coach and I didn’t see anyone collapse.

“I know that people, when a plane takes off, they sleep.

“Some people were dozing, sleeping, but we landed safely. There was not a single incident, we all came down and boarded the bus to go back to the terminal.”

The incident came four months after the Gambian team, who will face defending champions Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea in Group C, were caught up in September’s devastating earthquake in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, when over 2,000 people died.

Despite the experience on board the aborted flight, The Gambia chose to train upon their return to Banjul on Wednesday night, even though some of the squad were unable to take part.

“Some players could not train because of what happened. They still have headaches and that is worrying, while some of the players are still dizzy,” said Saintfiet.

“The team requested to train as we had been travelling overnight from Saudi Arabia to return home on Sunday, and Monday as well.

“We trained in a bid to release the stress.”

    Aborted flight ‘unacceptable’

The Gambia, who reached the quarter-finals of their maiden Nations Cup two years ago despite being the lowest-ranked team, are due to face neighbours Senegal on Monday in their opening game.

The Scorpions, with their plans rearranged, were set to travel on an Airbus 319 provided by Air Cote d’Ivoire, departing Banjul for Yamoussoukro at 16:00 GMT on Thursday.

A GFF statement said Gambia President Adama Barrow had intervened to obtain permission to land in the Ivorian capital rather than the initially intended destination of Abidjan.

“Saintfiet said he and team captain Omar Colley had refused to return to the same plane for the flight across West Africa.

“We want to fight and die for the country on the football pitch but not off it,” the Belgian coach said.

Kaba Bajo said the players had not been asked to fly on the same plane again but on a similar Bombardier model to the one used in the initial flight.

Video footage posted on social media by one of the squad, former Manchester United youngster Saidy Janko, showed heavily sweating players leaving the plane after its return to The Gambia.

Now based in Switzerland, the Young Boys player called the situation “unacceptable”.

“As soon as we entered the small plane hired to fly us, we noticed the immense heat that left us dripping in sweat,” he wrote on Instagram.

“It was assured to us by the crew that the air condition[ing] would start once in the sky.

“The inhumane heat mixed with the occurring lack of oxygen left many people with strong headaches and extreme dizziness. Furthermore, people started falling deeply asleep minutes after take-off.”

Janko also praised the pilot, saying the consequences could have been a lot worse.

“Knowing what could have happened, if we would have been exposed to the situation for any longer – in an airplane, running out of oxygen,” he said.

In a statement, the GFF said that “preliminary investigations indicated that there was a loss of cabin pressure and oxygen”.

    Bonus row for Scorpions
Wednesday’s incident came against a backdrop of tension between the players and the GFF in a row over bonuses.

The players had boycotted a training session while demanding a bonus payment for qualifying for their second Nations Cup after decades of failing to do so beforehand.

Local sports minister Bakary Badjie said that players had received 5,000 euros each for taking part in a training camp in Saudi Arabia earlier this month and that they had agreed to waive a qualification bonus in exchange for diplomatic passports, which have been received.

Gambia captain Omar Colley told local media on Wednesday that the GFF has received just over some 500,000 euros from the government, with Badjie having earlier said that the situation had gone as high up as President Barrow.

This money should then filter down to the players in the next few days.

In September, The Gambia secured their spot at the 2023 Afcon with a 2-2 against Congo in a match played in Marrakesh less than 48 hours after the earthquake.

Centre-back Colley said at the time that he could not celebrate their qualification given the trauma suffered during their time in Morocco.

Hold Davido responsible if anything happens to me — Tiwa Savage

Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has filed a petition against Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over an alleged threat to her life.

Savage in a petition addressed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke, and circulating online, alleged that the ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ crooner threatened her over a social media exchange.

She asked the police boss to hold Davido responsible if anything untoward happened to her, adding that Davido had asked their mutual connections to warn her.

Savage explained that the misunderstanding may not be unconnected to her relationship with Sophia Momodu, Davido’s baby mama, whom he (Davido) was having issues with.

    So This Happened (225) Reviews Tinubu’s S’Court Victory, UNIPORT…
The petition read, “I am writing to bring to your attention a distressing situation involving myself, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, and Mr David Adeleke popularly known as Davido.

“On the 23rd of December, I made a post which included myself and Sophía Momodu on my Instagram Story- a feature on Instagram which allows you to put up a post for twenty-four hours, and Mr David Adeleke sent messages to my manager who’s also part of his management team that I shouldn’t worry and should never say a word to him and that I was taunting him, uttering very disrespectful, malicious and derogatory words to my person.

“I responded to MR. DAVID ADELEKE’S message and told him not to reach out to me especially as I felt like I had been there for him and his daughter, Imade, and more importantly when he lost his son.

“The events of that day have also led to a barrage of calls and messages from our mutual connections, asking me what 1 did to Mr David Adeleke and that he’s upset that I chose to maintain a relationship with Imade’s mother, Sophia Momodu who he’s having issues with and also painting the exchange to look like I was the aggressor. He has also told our mutual connections to warn me to “be careful in Lagos because he was going to f”k me up”.

“This is beginning to feel like some form of online and offline harassment not just to me but also members of my team.

“The action of Mr David Adeleke is unethical and can be viewed as a direct threat to my rights to life, privacy and dignity of my person as guaranteed in Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and are also in contravention of Section 2424) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.

“I therefore would like to make this complaint and state that in the event that anything untoward or harmful were to happen to me or any member of my family, I would like the members of the Nigerian Police Force to hold Mr David Adeleke responsible.”

The Lagos Police Command Spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the petition from the singer.

“It is genuine,” Hundeyin said when contacted by our correspendent to confirm the veracity of the petition.

The PUNCH reports that there was a buzz on social media on Saturday, January 6, 2024, as popular afrobeats artistes— David Adeleke (Davido) and Tiwatope Savage—unfollowed each other on Instagram.

Davido and Savage were known to have had a cordial relationship over the years, with their children, Imade Adeleke and Jamil Balogun, following in their parents’ footsteps.

Both children attended the same school and had been seen on several occasions enjoying each other’s company.

However, there have been diverse speculations as to what could have informed both top artistes unfollowing each other, with some fans opining that the move could be a result of the waxing friendship between Savage and Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, Imade.

  • Blakk Rasta asserts Cook-a-thon attempt by Chef Faila is a “suicide mission”

Blakk Rasta asserts Cook-a-thon attempt by Chef Faila is a “suicide mission”

The media personality Blakk Rasta has expressed apprehension about Chef Faila’s continuous endeavour to surpass the Guinness World Record for the lengthiest culinary marathon.

Concerns regarding possible health risks related to Chef Faila’s cook-a-thon were voiced by Blakk Rasta. He vehemently disagreed with the notion that people should deprive themselves of enough sleep for an extended length of time, calling it a “suicide mission.” Using the occasion, he issued a warning against the growing nationwide trend of different types of marathons, such as sex-a-thons, stand-a-thons, and kiss-a-thons.

Blakk Rasta stressed the importance of putting one’s own wellbeing first in a video that Happyhome TV posted on their YouTube channel. He emphasised that it is dangerous to go without sleep for longer than three days and made it clear that he could not support such initiatives. Although he commended the participants’ efforts, he hoped they would think twice about the possible long-term effects on their health.

“They want to have a sex-a-thon in Ghana. Some wish to participate in a stand-a-thon. They spend five hours standing this way. No resting or doing anything for five hours. Another desire of some is to participate in a kiss-a-thon. That was a picture of Chef Faila in Tamale going about her business. Once more, even though we adore and value them, I will not support a suicide mission.

“I also believe that going more than three days without sleep is a suicide mission. That is not something I will endorse. Regarding you, I have no idea. I refer to it as a suicide mission, but you call it pushing the envelope. He prayed that they would not perish and would take a lesson that would benefit the entire country.

The Modern City Hotel in Tamale is the venue for Chef Faila’s cook-a-thon, which has already exceeded the 200-hour mark and is scheduled to last 240 hours in total.

  • Concerns regarding the revocation of the Convention 2024; Did they ultimately make use of the space? How much money is being refunded, and to whom?

Concerns regarding the revocation of the Convention 2024; Did they ultimately make use of the space? How much money is being refunded, and to whom?

Following the cancellation of the Convention 2024 by the Office of the President, many would-be-attendees were upset and in uproar for the event scheduled for Sunday 7th January, 2024 at the Independence Square.

The reasoning behind the abrupt cancellation seems to be shrouded in mystery and confusion, given that the contradictory official statement was of a scheduled yet “unforeseen state event”.

It remains to be seen however; how the state event took place despite clear obstructions of the equipment that was mounted for the Convention 2024.

There is also the matter of permit revocation. The permit was revoked from the Black Star Line Festival by the office of the President and compensation awarded to them for their purchase amounting to GHS 10,000.

However, our source from the New Africa Foundation refutes this claim, confirming, alongside receipt evidence that the government gave The New Africa Foundation the license to use the venue from the 2nd to the 8th of January, 2024. This further complicates matters as it means that the government is either paying the wrong entity for the event cancellation or worse, giving license for use of the venue to two separate companies at the same time.

Moreover, the document shared by the NAF, stamped by The Office of the President shows a fee of GHS30,000 paid by the New Africa Foundation in November 2023, not by the Black Star Line. Did the press statement for the government not have access to this file? Was the event even canceled?

    Total amount spent

According to The New Africa Foundation, they spent close to $250,000 on the event planning, setup and execution, a sunk cost they would not be able to recoup without seeking consequential legal recourse against the government for the abrupt cancellation.

Is this right for this to happen in a democracy?

There is a concern among many young people, present at the venue or online, that all these obfuscative tactics of subterfuge, create an impression of governmental suppression. In a year of great economic and financial turmoil in Ghana, the Convention pledged to ‘Ignite the voices of Africa’, offering a change in governance. Such incendiary language possibly caused what many see as an undemocratic suppression of the right to convene and associate, as well as the right to freedom of speech. Many responses following the cancellation of the Convention seem to insinuate that it was purposely sabotaged at the 11th hour due the Government’s fear of support for the messages being shared at this event.

Questions concerning the Ghana’s governance have arisen from the people, asking; Do we live in a democracy where people are allowed to convene and share a message of hope, or are we run by autocratic dictators, ready to stomp on anything with which they disagree.

What does the New Africa Foundation do (Mission)?

The New Africa Foundation’s mission entails disseminating the narrative that Africans are not solely reliant on external aid; rather, they aim to underscore the paradigm shift wherein Africans are poised to contribute aid to the global community. New Africa epitomizes this transformative ethos. Recognizing the prevailing imagery of African children and nations perpetuated by the world—marked by destitution and hunger—the foundation endeavors to cultivate, motivate, and elevate emerging youth in Africa through diverse channels. They strive to facilitate their engagement in impactful modes of self-governance and the establishment of robust business ventures and entrepreneurial endeavors.

    What was the convention for?

The Convention, sponsored by the New Africa Foundation. This event was scheduled to take place on the 7th of January 2024 at the Kwame Nkrumah Independence Square, coinciding with Ghana’s inauguration day. This event was to encompass different facets of African excellence; including thought leaders and artists, all before an eclectic audience including every stratum, community and group that constitute the country, a microcosmic representation for the macrocosmic continent, to Ignite the Voices of Africa. The intention was to; give hope to the youth, encourage the leaders for their great efforts to the continent, and usher in a new, collaboratively-developed vision for the future of Africa’s self-governance.

This event was to be a monumental and historic display of Africa’s ability to join forces and charter a course for a better future.
