  • Anlo Set to Celebrate Hogbetsotso Festival with a Call for Unity and Shared Destiny

Anlo Set to Celebrate Hogbetsotso Festival with a Call for Unity and Shared Destiny

ANLOGA, VOLTA REGION – The historic town of Anloga is poised to come alive with colour, culture, and reflection this Saturday, 1st November, as it hosts the annual Hogbetsotso Festival at the Hogbe Park, commencing at 9:00 AM.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the powerful and evocative theme: “Building Bridges: From Common History to a Common Destiny.” The theme underscores a forward-looking agenda, urging the Anlo people and Ghanaians at large to leverage their shared historical experiences as a foundation for a more united and prosperous future.

The grand durbar of chiefs, the centrepiece of the festival, will be graced by eminent traditional rulers. The event will be headed by Togbi Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo, who will preside over the ceremonies. He will be joined by a distinguished Special Guest, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, the Akwamuhene, whose presence symbolizes the building of inter-ethnic bridges and strengthens the cultural tapestry of Ghana.

Adding to the high-profile gathering will be Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo, a key figure in the traditional military structure of the Anlo state, who will play a central role in the proceedings.

The Hogbetsotso Festival, often described as one of Ghana’s most intellectually stimulating festivals, commemorates the epic migration of the Anlo Ewe people from the ancient walled city of Notsie in present-day Togo to their current homeland in the coastal plains of Ghana. The name “Hogbetsotso” translates to “the act of exodus from a place of bondage,” marking their escape from the tyrannical rule of King Agorkoli.

The festival is not merely a remembrance of a journey but a vibrant reaffirmation of the values of courage, wisdom, and unity that enabled their ancestors’ survival and success. Traditional activities include a peace-making period (Hogbe), the sprinkling of symbolic “water of liberation” (Adehoxe), and energetic drumming and dancing performances.

This year’s theme, “Building Bridges,” is expected to resonate through the speeches and performances, highlighting the importance of reconciliation, collaboration, and harnessing the collective strength of the people for developmental goals.

Residents, descendants of Anlo, tourists, and all well-wishers are cordially invited to converge at the Hogbe Park in Anloga this Saturday to witness a rich display of Anlo heritage. The event promises to be a profound cultural experience, blending solemn remembrance with a vibrant celebration of identity and a collective call to forge a common destiny.

Ghana is in mourning as reports emerge that Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has passed away at the age of 76. The news, which surfaced on Thursday, has sent shockwaves across the nation, as many pay tribute to one of Ghana’s most influential women in modern history.

A Life of Service and Impact

Born on November 17, 1948, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a pioneer in Ghanaian politics and women’s empowerment. As the wife of the late Former President Jerry John Rawlings, she served as First Lady during his time in office — first in 1979, and later from 1981 to 2001.

Throughout her public life, Nana Konadu distinguished herself as more than just a First Lady. She was a visionary leader, advocate for women’s rights, and a passionate voice for social justice.

Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement

In 1982, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, an organization that championed women’s empowerment across Ghana. Through this movement, thousands of women gained access to education, business opportunities, and political participation.

Her tireless advocacy reshaped how women were perceived in Ghanaian society, inspiring generations of women to take leadership roles in politics, education, and entrepreneurship.

    Political Ambition and Courage

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings later made history when she became the first woman to run for President of Ghana, leading the National Democratic Party (NDP). Her entry into presidential politics was a bold move that reflected her courage, determination, and belief in women’s ability to lead at the highest level.

    A Legacy That Lives On

Beyond her political life, Nana Konadu was known for her grace, confidence, and deep love for Ghana. Her legacy is intertwined with the country’s political and social progress over the last four decades.

She is survived by her children, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, and several grandchildren who continue to uphold the family’s values of leadership and service.

    National Reactions

Tributes have begun pouring in from Ghanaians at home and abroad, describing her as a “pillar of strength,” a “champion for women,” and a “trailblazer who changed the course of Ghana’s political history.”

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her contributions to national development and gender equality will continue to inspire future generations.

As the nation awaits official confirmation and funeral arrangements, Ghanaians reflect on a life well lived — one marked by courage, conviction, and compassion.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.

  • Dan Lartey Calls for Unity and Greater Diversity in Ghana’s Gospel Music Industry

Dan Lartey Calls for Unity and Greater Diversity in Ghana’s Gospel Music Industry

Ghanaian gospel music executive and media personality, Daniel Lartey — popularly known as Dan Lartey — has issued a heartfelt appeal to gospel musicians across the country, encouraging unity, unconditional love, and a renewed embrace of diversity within the industry.

In an open letter shared via his official Facebook page, Lartey expressed concern over growing issues within the gospel music space, including division, repetitiveness, and a lack of inclusivity. He stressed the need for emotional maturity among artists, especially when dealing with apathy or a lack of support from peers.

“In this journey of ministry through music, one important truth we must all embrace is that not everyone will show you love — and that’s okay,” he wrote. “If you choose to love, love without expectation. Let your expression of love be pure, not transactional.”

Reflecting on his own commitment to respond with love in the face of challenges, Lartey urged gospel musicians to avoid bitterness and instead focus on creating a peaceful and nurturing environment within the ministry.

He also voiced frustration over the recurring presence of the same artists on gospel concert lineups, warning that such repetition could hinder creativity and growth within the genre.

“The trend of booking the same faces and voices over and over again is slowly making our concerts predictable and, frankly, uninspiring,” Lartey noted. “Diversity of sound, message, and gifting is essential if we want to grow, remain relevant, and reach the fullness of what God intends for this ministry.”

He concluded his message with a powerful call to the gospel community:

“Let’s reflect. Let’s build. And above all, let’s love without expectations.”

Lartey’s candid message has sparked meaningful discussion across Ghana’s gospel music scene, with many stakeholders applauding his transparency and echoing the call for greater inclusivity, innovation, and support within the industry.
