Guinness World Record disqualifies Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon attempt

The Guinness World Record contender for the longest individual singing marathon, Afua Asantewaa, has been formally disqualified.

On their social media page, GWR revealed via a tweet that although Afua’s attempt to set a record for the longest singing marathon was unsuccessful, they hoped she would try again soon.

“Unfortunately Afua’s Guinness World Records attempt for the longest singing marathon was not successful, but we hope that she will make another attempt soon. We’ve seen how inspirational it has been for her fans. The evidence check had already begun before Afua requested priority service, so we refunded her payment earlier this month. We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts” GWR tweeted in response to a fan’s question about Afua record.

Afua Asantewaa sang for five days straight, starting at midnight on Sunday, December 24, and ending at seven in the morning on December 29.

The young woman had sung for five days, six hours, and 55 minutes when she ended her record attempt on Friday morning.

A few weeks ago, Afua Asantewaa revealed that she and her team paid for the priority review because they had been waiting weeks for an official statement from Guinness World Records regarding the longest singing marathon attempt ever made by an individual.

She claims that although the priority review is $650, there are additional unstated fees. As a result, she ended up paying $750 in total.

Ghanaians have been deeply hurt by this disqualification.

Zookeeper killed while trying to rescue woman from lion

Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State have shut down the zoological garden on the institution’s campus following the killing of a veterinary technologist, Mr Olabode Olawuyi, by a nine-year-old lion on Monday.

Speaking with The PUNCH on Tuesday, the Chairman of the National Association of Non-Academic Staff of Universities, OAU branch, Mr Wole Odewumi, said the management of the university had shut the garden.

He explained that the veterinary technologist was attacked by the lion while he was attempting to free a woman, who was first attacked by the lion.

Odewumi said, “I spoke to some of his colleagues, and they told me what happened. The lion attacked a woman first. The woman is also a staff working at the zoo.

“The deceased intervened to free the woman from the lion. He must have assumed that the lion would recognise him. His intervention to free the woman must have infuriated the animal. The lion left the woman and attacked him squarely.

“After he was freed from the lion’s grip, they rushed him to the health centre on campus here. He however died before he got there. But the second person that was attacked, a woman, is still on admission receiving treatment presently.”

Odewumi also said a mourning procession was held on the campus on Tuesday in honour of Olawuyi while the management of the university met with his family.

He said, “We held a mourning procession in honour of the deceased this morning and members of the management addressed us after that sober event.

“All unions on campus joined the procession. The management promised to take necessary action. There will be a committee that his union will also have a representative in, that will work on the issues raised. I have visited the scene. The zoo has been locked up. It is officially locked up.

“The management will not want anybody to go there for now. Some members of the family of the deceased were around and we handed them over to the management.”

Going by the information on the Curriculum Vitae of the deceased, the 59-year-old Olawuyi born on  December 22nd, 1965 would have exited service in 2025.

The management of the institution had in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olanrewaju, on Monday, explained that members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue the deceased, but could not, as the animal held him and mauled him.

According to a video recorded at the scene, the lion was later shot dead by a security operative working with the school, as the mangled remains of the late Olawuyi soaked in blood were laid at the entrance to the garden.

  • BREAKING: Hajia 4Reall pleads guilty to a romance scam in U.S court

BREAKING: Hajia 4Reall pleads guilty to a romance scam in U.S court

According to information obtained by Kobbyjosvan.com, Hajia 4 Reall has accepted guilty plea to a romance scam.

Hajia 4Reall is expected to be freed on a $500,000 bond and wear an ankle GPS tracker.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, announced on Wednesday, July 21, 2024, that MONA FAIZ MONTRAGE had entered a guilty plea to her involvement in the laundering of the proceeds of several romance scams, according to an official report from the US Attorney’s Office.

“MONTRAGE pled guilty today to conspiracy to receive stolen money before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave,” the report said.

According to Damian Williams, “Mona Faiz Montrage was arrested abroad and is currently facing serious consequences for her actions after she knowingly accepted money stolen from older Americans through romance scams.”

Romance scams such as Montrage’s harmed her vulnerable, elderly victims not only in the cruel betrayal of trust in the realization that their online romantic connection was fiction, but by also callously stealing their money.

“This Office and our law enforcement partners are relentless in bringing fraudsters who target Americans to justice, no matter where they are,” the U.S attorney concluded.

It is reported that Hajia 4 Reall entered a guilty plea to one count of conspiring to receive stolen money, which entails a five-year maximum prison sentence.

The Ghanaian influencer additionally consented to make restitution in the same amount and forfeit $2,164,758.41. Hajia 4 Reall is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul A. Crotty.

U.S. prosecutors claim that Hajia 4 Reall was a part of a criminal organisation (the “Enterprise”) based in West Africa that perpetrated a number of frauds against people and companies in the U.S., including romance scams, from at least in or about 2013 through at least in or about 2019.

Numerous elderly, single men and women who were susceptible to romance scams were targeted by the Enterprise. The Enterprise routinely tricked victims into thinking they were in a romantic relationship with someone who had a false identity that members of the Enterprise had taken on by sending them texts, emails, and social media messages.

Several victims of romance scams who were duped into sending money by members of the Enterprise are alleged to have given money to Hajia 4 Reall. Payments to transfer gold from abroad to the United States were one of the many deceptive pretences used to coerce victims into sending money to Hajia 4Reall.

Over $2 million in fraudulent funds from the Enterprise were received by the mother of one controlled bank account.

Rent is more expensive in Canada than here; be grateful – Hawa Koomson to Ghanaians

Ghanaians have been cautioned by Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Mavis Hawa Koomson to be happy with the state of affairs in their nation.

The cost of living is a global crisis, she claimed, but living conditions in Ghana are still far better than in other countries.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East recently urged Ghanaians to compare rent rates in Ghana and Canada during an interview with Nana Yaa Brefo and JB on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɫn Nsʛmpa.

She spoke about her recent trip to Canada, pointing out that it was much more expensive than Ghana to rent even a single room there—more than 2,000 Canadian dollars a month.

“People have been bemoaning the high cost of rent in Ghana. They should go to Canada. You pay more than two thousand Canadian dollars a month. That is not even for a chamber and hall—that is just for one room.

“When you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far better,” she said in Twi. “Things are hard now, and there is a high cost of living everywhere.”

She claimed that despite difficulties in the world economy, Ghana is still reasonably priced, and she attributed this to the efforts of the government.

In response to complaints that living conditions in Canada were better than in Ghana, Koomson refuted the claim that living expenses in Canada are higher.

FIFA to establish a new football academy in Ghana – Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger, Chief of Global Football Development at FIFA, has disclosed that the organisation responsible for overseeing football intends to establish an academy in Ghana.

He claims that with the opening of academies, FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme will assist five African nations, including Ghana.

FIFA plans to establish 75 academies worldwide by 2026; the other nations are Cameroon, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Zambia.

“Over the next six months and one year, it’s to open more academies,” Wenger told Supersport in an interview.

“We are now close to opening a new one in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Ghana and Zambia and we want to develop five new academies there and, at the end of 2026, we’ll have 75 academies all over the world.

“That means football education has moved forward and that’s what we’re focusing on at the moment. We want the game to be more competitive and of better quality and there is only one way to do it: it’s the quality of the education and quality of the competitions.”

The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are under intense pressure to make investments in the nation’s sporting facilities.

    Arsene Wenger
The “Save Ghana Football” demonstration was a protest that took place last Wednesday with the goal of holding football authorities accountable.

The conveners sent a petition to Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, outlining some of the most important reforms that must be implemented, such as creating a national football policy and forming a commission to look into the underwhelming performance of the different national teams.

The dissolution of national team management committees and accountability for the distribution of funds from competitions such as the World Cup were also high on the agenda.
