    AKA’s death: 6 suspects arrested for murder of South African rapper

    On Tuesday, February 27, South African police announced that six suspects had been detained in relation to the death of Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, one of the hottest rap artists in the country.

    AKA was shot and killed on February 10, 2023, while strolling with a friend named Tibs outside a well-known Durban restaurant, just hours before he was scheduled to perform at a local club.

    According to police, the rapper, 35, was followed from the moment he arrived at the airport until the murder was carried out.

    “Six people have been arrested that will appear in court on Thursday. These six played different roles in the murder.

    “The six of them initially followed Mr. Forbes from the airport on arrival, the only way to his hotel as well as the restaurant where the incident happened,” police minister Bheki Cele told a press conference in Durban.

    According to the South African police, the oldest suspect is 36. The “mastermind” of the murder, two shooters, two spotters, and the “organiser of vehicle and firearms,” according to the police, are all in custody.

    At the press conference, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the provincial police commissioner, informed reporters that a number of the people detained had connections to separate murder cases.

    Two of the suspects, he claimed, had fled to neighbouring Eswatini. Nonetheless, they were detained by police working with Interpol and the Eswatini government, and extradition procedures would soon start.

    Mkhwanazi stated that although police were not willing to talk about it, they suspected the motive.

    Several celebrities are among the victims of South Africa’s one of the highest murder rates in the world.

    The Tamale and Kumasi International Airports will have new names, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s announcement.

    He announced that the recently inaugurated Tamale airport will be known as the Yakubu Tali International Airport, and that the Kumasi International Airport will be renamed Nana Agyeman Prempeh I Airport.

    He made this announcement during his State of the Nation address on Tuesday, February 27.

    He said “I have one more scheduled date with the House, when I would be here to give an accounting of my time in office. By that time, my successor would have been elected, and we would be getting ready for the swearing-in ceremony. The elections will be held peacefully, and the candidate with credibility to take us on to a higher level will win. Let me wish all of us well in the elections on 7th December.

    “Before then, there a number of important tasks lie ahead of us, one of which will be commissioning the Nana Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, and naming the recently commissioned airport in Tamale the Yakubu Tali International Airport.

    “Mr. Speaker, we stumbled, but we are rising again. We were bruised, but we are healing. We have recovered our footing. We have dusted ourselves off, and now we face tomorrow with confidence. Every day we pray and hope that adversity may spare our families, our communities and our dear nation. But should we be confronted by misfortune; we must face it like people with a proud history who fight and do not flee. Yenim ko; yen nim adwane. That is the Ghanaian spirit. That is our armour and our shield. This is our ethos.”

    As the head of state, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasised that he alone bears responsibility for the current economic hardship.

    According to him, the head of state is accountable for managing the country’s finances under the Ghanaian constitution.

    In light of this, he stated that the president bears ultimate responsibility. While giving the State of the Nation address in Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, he stated that “he or she takes the blame for the challenges.”

    “It is his last State of the Nation Address and it is this same State of the Nation Address that is taking them into opposition. So it is a handing over State of the Nation Address,” he stated in an interview with Atinka TV.

    “They cannot win the 2024 election no matter what,” he emphasized.

    The multi-award winning musician Okyeame Kwame has dispelled the myth that famous Ghanaians lead opulent lives.

    The musician claims that politicians are the ones who have demonstrated extravagant lifestyles.

    His remarks come in response to the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) announcement that it would begin lifestyle audits aimed at celebrities and people who might be considered to have excessive wealth.

    Conversely, the “Yeeko” hitmaker claimed that celebrities experience financial hardships because their incomes are insufficient to support their lavish lifestyles.

    “I have been in the celebrity space for 20 something years, I do not think they will find any artiste who are “criminals” or many celebs and film makers because these people are suffering. It is very difficult to be in this industry as an influencer or artiste and then just by that be able to survive. I have not seen celebrities in Ferraris or Maybachs or Porsche cars or multimillion dollar mansions. Where are they? Show me one.

    “However, the people that I have seen living lavishly are politicians. I have seen civil servants who make maybe ₵14000 a month and driving S-class,” he told Berla Mundi on TV3’s New Day on Monday.

    He clarified that their occasional vacation outside of Ghana is solely funded by their savings.

    Instead, Okyeame Kwame urged EOCO to concentrate more on politicians who are most likely to be affected by its proposed plan to combat corruption in the nation.

    “They are going to start investigating celebrities and in less than 30 days, they will be done because it is obvious that there are no or very few celebrities who are enjoying unwarranted wealth,” he noted.

    The musician expressed his excitement, nevertheless, at EOCO’s decision to protect integrity across the nation.

    The decision by EOCO follows the recent guilty plea in a $2 million romance scam case made by Ghanaian musician and social media influencer Mona Montrage, also known as Hajia4reall.

    Sadik Sulley, better known by his stage name SDK, is a well-known comedian and content creator from Ghana. He has spoken out about his ongoing struggle with mental illness brought on by the deaths of his parents in 2021 and 2023.

    In an exclusive interview with Giovani Caleb on 3FM Drive, SDK disclosed that he is currently seeing a therapist in order to deal with the psychological distress that comes with losing both parents.

    He claims that occasionally, the memories of losing both of his parents trouble him and cause difficult situations to the point where it interferes with his ability to create and be productive. He admits that things have gotten better since he sought a therapist’s advice for this reason.

    “It has been crazy since I lost both parents. That one really dey eat me up. So now I have gone to seek the advice of a therapist and I’m on it.

    “It got to a point that I am not really inspired sometimes the work will be there but I’m not motivated to do it,” he narrated.

    The food blogger went on to counsel anyone in similar circumstances to get support, including therapy sessions, and to be open to receiving it.

    Monday marks day 26 of Chef Smith’s 610 hours of cooking at the Amadia Shopping Centre at Spintex, being the official sponsor. He started his cooking marathon on February 1 and plans to finish it on March 6, 2024.

    Renowned Ghanaian celebrities, including Kwaku Manu, Clemento Suarez, Nana Ama McBrown, SDK, OB Amponsah, and others, have flocked to the location of the marathon in support of Chef Smith.

    Already, another Ghanaian Chef Failatu Abdul-Razak has embarked on similar record attempt cooking for 227 hours.

    Official confirmation of Failatu’s attempt has not yet been issued by Guinness World Records.

    Lead singer of Morgan Heritage, Peter Morgan passes away

    The lead singer of the Grammy-winning reggae group Morgan Heritage, Peter “Peetah” Morgan, passed away.

    The band released a statement stating that the singer passed away on February 25.

    “It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son, and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today,” the group said.

    “Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask your continued prayers as we go through this process. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing.”

    The cause of Peter’s death was kept a secret by the group. He was forty-six years old.

    Peter Morgan was one of Jamaican singer Denroy Morgan’s over twenty children. He was born in Brooklyn, a borough in New York City where thousands of Jamaicans have lived since the 1960s.

    In 1994, the five Morgan siblings founded Morgan Heritage. The same year they released their debut album, Miracles, they were signed by MCA.

    The family relocated to Denroy’s native Jamaica following Miracles’ publication.

    The group was left with Peter, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan after Una and Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan left.

    They successfully worked on group and individual projects.

    The group’s 2015 album Strictly Roots won the Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Album category in 2016. The band later released the album Avrakedabra, which was nominated for another Grammy in 2018.

    Peter Morgan’s unmistakable voice has been at the forefront of Morgan Heritage’s journey for three decades, steering the group through some of the most significant anthems in modern roots-reggae.

    From timeless tracks like “Don’t Haffi Dread (To Be Rasta)” to soulful melodies like “Down by the River” and “She’s Still Loving Me,” his vocal prowess has left an indelible mark on reggae music.

    ECOWAS lifts economic, travel sanctions on Niger, others

    The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted sanctions imposed on the Niger Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, member states that are ruled by the military, according to The Cable report.

    The ECOWAS officials said on Saturday [Feb. 24], that the decision was based on humanitarian concerns, particularly given the Lent season and the approaching month of Ramadan.

    The West African regional bloc has invited all four countries to an imminent meeting.

    The bloc has eased the sanctions it placed on Niger after the military takeover last year. The move forms part of a renewed drive for diplomacy following a series of political crises in the area in recent months.

    “ECOWAS lifts economic sanctions, border closures, commercial flights and overflights of the country with immediate effect,” the West African regional bloc posted on X.

    A no-fly zone and border closures were among the sanctions being lifted “with immediate effect,” the president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said on Saturday, Aljazeera reported.

    The lifting of the sanctions is “on purely humanitarian grounds” to ease the suffering caused as a result, Touray told reporters after the bloc’s summit in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

    The summit aimed to address existential threats facing the region as well as implore three military-led nations that have quit the bloc—Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso—to rescind their decision.

    Following recent coups, all three member states exited the bloc.

    ECOWAS chairman and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said in his opening address that the bloc “must re-examine our current approach to the quest for constitutional order in four of our Member States”, referring to the three suspended countries, as well as Guinea, which is also military-led.

    Tinubu urged Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to “reconsider the decision” and said they should “not perceive our organisation as the enemy.”

    Niger’s President Bazoum was toppled in a military coup in July, causing ECOWAS to restrict trade and impose sanctions on the country.

    Reports suggest he is still imprisoned at Niamey’s Presidential Palace. On the eve of the conference, his lawyers petitioned ECOWAS to demand his release.

    Earlier this week, ECOWAS co-founder and former Nigerian military leader General Yakubu Gowon reportedly called for the body to lift “all sanctions that have been imposed on Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger”.
