The Asante Kingdom is in mourning following the death of the revered Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the age of 91.

Her passing was formally announced by the Oyoko Royal Family to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during an emergency meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council held on Monday in Kumasi.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, born Nana Ama Konadu, ascended to the stool as the 14th Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom in 2017, succeeding her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. As the biological sister of the current Asantehene, her reign symbolized continuity, tradition, and the enduring strength of matrilineal leadership in Asanteman.

Known for her wisdom, compassion, and deep-rooted commitment to Asante customs, Nana Konadu Yiadom III played a vital role in upholding cultural heritage and guiding the chieftaincy institution. Her counsel was highly regarded not only within the royal family but across the broader Asante Confederacy and Ghanaian society.

Tributes are pouring in from traditional rulers, government officials, and citizens across the country, all highlighting her significant contribution to national unity, women’s leadership, and cultural preservation.

Details regarding funeral rites and public commemorations are expected to be announced by the Manhyia Palace in the coming days, in accordance with Asante custom.

As the Kingdom prepares for a period of mourning, black and red cloths — traditional mourning colors — are expected to be worn throughout the Ashanti Region, with flags flying at half-mast in key cultural and administrative centers.

The passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy deeply embedded in the spiritual and cultural life of the Asante people.
