The trial of the suspects in the terrible death of Major Maxwell Mahama in Ghana has come to an end with a historic decision.
It will be remembered that the young military officer caused national indignation and condemnation when he was brutally murdered in 2017 in Denkyira-Obuasi while performing his duties. The court has now served justice by sentencing 12 of the 14 suspected people to life in prison for their roles in the horrific crime, capping off nearly 7 years of legal proceedings.
The 12 suspects were convicted of the deceased soldier’s murder and conspiracy. The individuals involved are Kwadzo Animah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Baidoo, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, John Boasie, Akwesi Asante, Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffuor, and William Baah, the area’s assemblyman at the time.
The jury’s decision led the court, which included Justice Mariama Owusu, a Justice of the Supreme Court serving as an extra High Court judge, to find the 12 guilty. Nonetheless, after the jury found them not guilty, Bismark Donkor and Bismarck Abanga were declared not guilty and were allowed to leave the country.
The case that had been pending in court since 2018 was concluded today, January 29, 2024, when a jury of seven members returned their verdicts following approximately an hour of deliberation.
