Their electrifying showcase captivated audiences and highlighted Ghana’s rich musical heritage on a global platform.

Dr. Pushkin, born Paul Azunre, is a trailblazer in the Afro Hip-Hop genre, seamlessly blending traditional Ghanaian sounds with contemporary hip-hop rhythms. His journey to SXSW 2025 follows a series of significant milestones, including the release of his critically acclaimed debut solo album Outlandish in 2023. The album’s success was reflected in his official SXSW 2023 performance, where he was named one of the “Essential SXSW 2023 Acts” by the Austin Chronicle.

The momentum continued throughout 2024 with high-profile collaborations with Lyrical Joe, Ko-Jo Cue, and CJ Biggerman, which captivated Ghanaian rap fans and gained widespread attention. Fans are eagerly awaiting his upcoming album duology No Heroes / No Miracles, which features prominent artists such as Strongman, Eno Barony, Stevo Atambire, B-Wayne, Obibini, and AlaptaWan.

Ataman Nikita, Dr. Pushkin’s brother, is quickly emerging as a star in his own right, with his soulful vocals and innovative blend of Afro Pop and Kologo music. His debut single “Enigma” showed his musical versatility, and his feature on Dr. Pushkin’s track “No Go Go” with Ko-Jo Cue exemplified their collaborative chemistry.

CJ Biggerman, known for his sharp lyricism and dynamic stage presence, has been a significant force in Ghanaian hip-hop. His collaboration with Dr. Pushkin on “Just Watch,” featuring Taitan, became an instant hit, showcasing their collective talent and resonating with fans and critics alike.

Their SXSW 2025 performance was a major highlight, mixing acoustic and traditional hip-hop elements to celebrate global diversity while proudly representing Ghana. The setlist included a mix of their collaborative hits and solo tracks, creating a rich sonic experience that left a lasting impact on the audience.

Quata Budukusu, a pioneer in Ghanaian rap and credited with developing the rapid-fire, tongue-twisting style later popularized by Sarkodie, also graced the stage. His performance added a unique dimension to the showcase, demonstrating the evolution of Ghanaian rap.

Ahead of SXSW, Dr. Pushkin released his latest single, “Peace,” which introduces a fresh sound he calls Kologo Soul. This track blends the traditional Kologo guitar from Ghana with modern hip-hop and R&B influences. The lyrics explore the complex nature of peace, with Ataman Nikita providing hopeful melodies while Dr. Pushkin’s verses confront the challenges of achieving it. Amid global unrest, “Peace” aims to inspire hope and reflection, urging listeners to consider the ongoing pursuit of a better future.

The performance was further enhanced by instrumentalist Dr. AZA and DJ Selecta Rah, who added live musical elements and smooth transitions. American rapper Wyldthang also joined the stage, bridging the gap between Ghanaian and U.S. hip-hop influences with a powerful feature.

The group’s appearance at SXSW 2025 not only amplified their personal profiles but also showcased Ghanaian music on the international stage. By fusing traditional Ghanaian elements with modern sounds, Dr. Pushkin, Ataman Nikita, and CJ Biggerman are redefining Afro Hip-Hop and setting the stage for future Ghanaian artists to gain global recognition.
