  • Vietnam sentences real estate tycoon to death in $12B fraud case

Vietnam sentences real estate tycoon to death in $12B fraud case

In the biggest financial fraud case in Vietnam’s history, real estate mogul Truong My Lan was found guilty on Thursday and given the death penalty by a Ho Chi Minh City court, according to state media Thanh Nien.

The 67-year-old chair of the real estate firm Van Thinh Phat faces fraud charges totaling $12.5 billion, or almost 3% of the GDP of the nation in 2022. Between 2012 and 2022, she illegally controlled the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank, using it to syphon off funds through thousands of fictitious companies and bribing government officials.

During the ongoing and intensifying anti-corruption campaign in Vietnam since 2022, Lan’s arrest in October 2022 was one of the most well-known. Vietnamese politics at the highest levels have been impacted by the so-called Blazing Furnace campaign. Following his involvement in the campaign, former president Vo Van Thuong announced his resignation in March.

However, the country has been shocked by the scope of Lan’s trial. VTP was among Vietnam’s richest real estate firms, with projects including luxury residential buildings, offices, hotels and shopping centers. The scope of the scam, according to analysts, begged the question of whether other companies or banks had made comparable mistakes, dimming Vietnam’s economic prospects and unsettling foreign investors at a time when Vietnam has been attempting to present itself as the perfect location for companies looking to shift their supply chains away from China.

Vietnam’s real estate market has been particularly severely affected: According to state media, developers have been luring buyers with discounts and gifts of gold, and even though shophouse rent in Ho Chi Minh City has dropped by a third, many of the city’s center’s properties remain unoccupied. An estimated 1,300 real estate companies left the market in 2023.

Vietnam’s leading politician, Nguyen Phu Trong, the general secretary of the Communist Party, declared in November that the fight against corruption would “continue for the long term.”

  • My tigers are expensive to keep, I feed them with a cow every 3 days – Nana Kwame Bediako

My tigers are expensive to keep, I feed them with a cow every 3 days – Nana Kwame Bediako

The New Force Movement’s founder and well-known business magnate from Ghana, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has disclosed that his tigers, or majestic companions, are still with him and are flourishing under his watchful eye.

During an exclusive interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the independent presidential candidate refuted rumours and claims that the Forestry Commission’s Wildlife Division had taken his two tigers.

Insisting that no one could take the animals from him, he stated that they had always been in his care.

Cheddar also revealed that the cost of maintaining the tigers is high because he feeds them a cow every three days.

”Nobody took the animals from me, they can’t take them from me. You saw the headlines that I have been given the approval to keep two tigers at home and that is what happened. They have always been in my possession….they are my animals and I feed them. I feed them with one cow every three days. Its very expensive to keep them, ” he said.

The well-known businessman and philanthropist expressed his gratitude to Forest for their assistance in obtaining a suitable facility for his animals.

But following a visit to the estate, Luri Kanton, the Wildlife Division’s Director of Operations, claimed in a media interview that the big cats posed no threat to the occupants.

“We have made the visit to look at the tigers to look at their conditions, the cage they are put in and then we want to assure the general public that the tigers are well secured in this cage and our investigation also reveals that so far, their welfare too is being catered for.”

The animals will be moved once a new building has been built for them, Mr Kanton said at the time. The residents of Wonda World Estates, Avenue Lincoln, which is close to the British High Commission at Ridge in Accra, had expressed concerns, which he further allayed.

“The tigers are safe, healthy and well protected and relocation will be done after investigations and a new structure would’ve to be constructed at a new location before the relocation of the animals could be done”.
