    2024 elections: Stephen Appiah to contest as independent candidate

    The former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah, is set to contest as an independent candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

    The former Juventus midfield player will run in the general elections of 2024, according to Fiifi Tackie, a representative for the Ayew family, who made the announcement on X.

    One of the most hotly contested parliamentary seats in the upcoming elections will be in Ayawaso West Wuogon, where well-known actor John Dumelo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is running to unseat the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    GWR: Ghanaian activist, Abubakar Tahiru sets record for hugging 1,123 trees

    Ghanaian student studying forestry and environmental activism has broken the record for the most trees hugged in an hour.

    Abubakar Tahiru, 29, hugged 1,123 trees in total—nearly 19 every minute on average.

    Abubakar developed a strong interest in the preservation of the natural world while growing up in a farming village in Tepa, Ghana.

    Abubakar relocated to Auburn University in Alabama, USA, last year to start his master’s programme in forestry after completing his undergraduate studies in forestry at one of Ghana’s best universities. 

    Tuskegee National Forest, one of four national forests in the timber-rich state of Alabama, was the site of his record attempt.

    For the purposes of this record, a hug is described as a close embrace with both arms wrapped around a tree. The attempt is deemed invalid if a tree is hugged more than once or if any tree is damaged.

    According to Abubakar, the hardest part of the record attempt was having to move quickly between trees while making sure that each hug met the requirements. He also discovered that the act of repeatedly hugging was very exhausting.

    His attempt to break the record was made more difficult by the fact that he was fasting for Ramadan and therefore was not allowed to drink any water.

    “Not being able to drink water throughout the attempt posed a significant challenge, especially given the physical exertion required,” Abubakar said.

    “However, this also proved to be helpful in a way, as there was no need to pause for water breaks, allowing me to continue the attempt uninterrupted from start to finish.”

    Abubakar easily beat the minimum requirement of 700 to become the first holder of this record, averaging one hug every three seconds.

    “Achieving this world record feels incredibly rewarding,” he said.

    “It’s a meaningful gesture to highlight the crucial role of trees in our ecosystem and the urgency of environmental conservation.”

    Abubakar now intends to increase his involvement in forestry by working on the creation of sustainable practices and partnering with environmental organisations to support sustainable projects, following his achievement of this world record.

    Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi sentenced to death

    According to Toomaj Salehi’s attorney, dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death for his participation in the widespread protests that swept through Iran in 2022.

    “An order for the execution of Toomaj Salehi has been issued,” Salehi’s lawyer Amir Raesian tweeted Wednesday.

    The rapper was reportedly tortured after being arrested, detained, and kept in solitary confinement.

    According to Iranian pro-reform sites Shargh and Entekhab, an Isfahan court on Tuesday overturned the ruling of the higher Supreme Court in Saleh’s case, adopting the original finding of “corruption on earth” and imposing the death penalty as the maximum penalty. This is an unprecedented move.

    Salehi, 32, was briefly released from jail last year before police brutally arrested him again and sent him to a prison in Isfahan, according to witnesses at the time. Salehi has been vocally critical of the Iranian regime and outspoken against the government in rap lyrics and on social media.

    In a statement released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN experts said that he was detained again after he made an appearance in a video in which he claimed to have been subjected to abuse and held in solitary confinement for 252 days after his arrest in October 2022.

    Ye-One Rhie, a German member of parliament who supports Salehi politically in Europe, referred to Salehi’s death sentence as “absurd and inhumane.”

    “It is still completely unclear how this verdict came about,” she tweeted Wednesday. “It is unbelievable how irresponsibly and arbitrarily the Iranian regime treats defendants. It is impossible to recognize the rule of law in the chaos of the courts in charge.”

    Ghanaian Dr. Wisdom Tettey named president of Carleton University

    • Tettey will also join the political science department of the school in a tenure-track role.

    Dr. Wisdom Tettey, a Ghanaian who holds the position of vice president at the University of Toronto, takes up his five-year term as Carleton’s president.

    It was announced on Tuesday that Wisdom Tettey will take over as vice-chancellor and the 17th president of Carleton University on January 1.

    Carleton’s board of governors chair Greg Farrell referred to Tettey as “an inclusive and authentic leader who will build on the university’s reputation for teaching, learning, and research excellence” in a news release. With his audacious plan to establish Carleton as a premier university on a national and worldwide level, he left an impression on the advisory committee.

    “Fostering and sustaining an equitable, inclusive, healthy, caring and mutually supportive working and learning environment” was Tettey’s stated commitment.

    In addition to his role as principal of U of T Scarborough and professor of political science and development studies, Tettey is currently vice-president of the University of Toronto.

    According to a release, he has assisted in implementing a five-year strategic plan called Inspiring Inclusive Excellence to interact with a variety of viewpoints both inside and outside the university. He also contributed to the creation of the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Higher Education, which lays out a commitment to comprehending the consequences of racism against Black people and working to improve Black inclusion.

    “Under his direction, U of T Scarborough has thrived as a centre of inclusive excellence and a prototype for long-term campus expansion,” said Meric Gertler, president of the University of Toronto.

    In 2018, Tettey assumed the role of vice president at U of T. In 2023, he was nominated again for a second five-year term.

    Dr. Tettey, a researcher in African politics, media, and diaspora, will start a tenure-track job in the political science department at Carleton University.

    He had previously served as interim dean of the Faculty of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary and as dean of the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia.

    Ghanaian-born Tettey completed his second education at St. John’s School, Sekondi (in the Western Region of Ghana) and undergraduate studies at the University of Ghana in Accra, the capital city before going to Canada for graduate work. He received a political science master’s degree from the University of British Columbia and a doctorate from Queen’s University.

    Since Benoit-Antoine Bacon left Carleton on August 31 to take a position as president and vice-chancellor at the University of British Columbia, Jerry Tomberlin has filled the roles of interim president and vice-chancellor.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Pope Francis had a private meeting earlier yesterday Thursday, April 24, 2024 in Rome.

    The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and the pontiff met in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall “auletta,” or small study, according to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office.

    Following that, Dr. Bawumia met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations.

    According to the Holy See Press Office, the meeting focused on a number of facets of Ghana’s political and socioeconomic environment while highlighting the Holy See and Ghana’s positive relationship.

    The conversation brought attention to the two organisations’ continued cooperation, particularly in vital fields like healthcare and education.

    In a post on X, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated: “This historic meeting gave me the chance to strengthen Ghana’s long-standing relationship with the Vatican State and the Pope and to discuss many national and global issues with Pope Francis.”

    “I also had a meeting with the Vatican Secretary for relations with States and International Organisations, H.E Paul Richard Gallagher and Ghana’s pride, Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, who was kind to show me around the Vatican.”

    Joselyn Dumas related a friend of hers who expressed reluctance to marry a child-bearing woman because he did not want to be the father of a child who was not his biological child.

    She argued that the fact that many single women choose not to marry is partly due to the prejudices they encounter as parents.

    “Let me tell you why we don’t go out and marry. I spoke to a friend of mine here, Anthony. He said, ‘Me, I will never be with a born one’.

    “His reason was, ‘Why would I come and raise somebody else’s child? That’s not my bloodline. He doesn’t have any trace of my DNA in him. Why am I going to now help someone’s bloodline grow? What about mine?’

    “And I said to myself that this is the reason why a lot of single mothers are single with their children,” he said.

    The actress also criticised the differences in viewpoints regarding adoption, contending that there should be no distinction made in how one views raising a child who is not biologically theirs.

    “I asked him, ‘What about adoption?’ And he said that’s different. But if you ask me, it’s not that different,” she said.

    She made it clear that single moms usually choose to raise their kids alone out of sacrifice and necessity rather than a desire for a solitary life.

    “You can raise the child on your own. It’s a sacrifice you’ve also made as a woman. Regardless of what it is, you are going to have this child and you’re going to raise this child. It’s not because we want to be single,” she said.

    Reports reaching Kobbyjosvan.com confirm that, the veteran Nollywood actor Pa Zulu Adigwe has passed away.

    Movie producer Stanley Nwoke, also known as Stanley Ontop, shared the news on Instagram.

    Adigwe’s cause of death was not disclosed by the producer, using his Instagram handle, he wrote: “I regret to announce the passing of a veteran actor. Late Mr Zulu Adigwe… what caused his death is yet to be known”.

    The Nigerian film industry is left with a void following the passing of Pa Zulu Adigwe. In addition to the recently deceased Junior Pope, a number of other Nollywood actors have also passed away this year.
